1) Reevaluate your horse’s healthcare needs.
When life gets busy and nothing outwardly appears to be wrong with your horse, even the most devoted horse owners can fall behind on monitoring their animal’s health. This year, take the time and steps necessary to ensure you horse is in good health and keep them that way. This includes making an annual veterinary appointment and keeping up with farrier appointments too. You’ll also want to double check that their nutritional needs are being met and create an exercise routine you both can stick to.
2) Spend more quality time together.
Make it a point this year to spend more quality time with your horse. You will both benefit from your time together and your relationship will grow that much stronger. Try setting a goal to get out riding a few days a week, groom them more regularly, or even learn a new stunt or riding maneuver together. The extra activity and challenge will help to mentally stimulate your horse too, keeping them happy and their brain sharp.
3) Upgrade your horse’s shelter.
Are you constantly walking past loose bolts sticking out of the ground or seeing doors wobble when you close them? Make it a priority to take care of barn repairs and safety issues in the new year. Or, better yet, get them a brand-new, better-quality shelter altogether! Don’t forget to commit to keeping their new barn clean and well-stocked, so your horse remains healthy and comfortable this year and for many after.
