Summer will soon be upon us, and that means temperatures will be higher and the humidity more potent. While we tend to think of horse barns as housing horses during inclement weather, such as rain, sleet or even snow, we also need to protect horses from the sun and the heat as well.
Just one look at a weather map for summer 2014, such as this one found on Accuweather, and the forecast is anything but sunny for most of the country – predictions of droughts in California and Texas, heat waves in the Pacific Northwest and strong thunderstorms in the Midwest, not to mention hurricane season.
California, in particular, has recently experienced the driest year on record and with such dryness continuing in the summer, we must prepare to protect the ones we love, especially the animals under our care.
We must heed the words of weather professionals, such as Accuweather. They report, “As the wildlife risk heightens, minimal rainfall and lack of water will continue to hit the agricultural and livestock industries hard across the region, limiting fruit and nut production in the U.S.” A grim outlook, for sure, but one we can’t ignore.
Summer is poised to be a doozy, so best to be prepared and purchase top quality horse barns today. You can rest easy knowing your horses will not only be comfortable, but safe as well.
